Everyday training

Does your dog ignore every word you say? Is your recall more like a pantomime performance across the park? Are you tired of saying the word ‘sit’ over and over again? Or maybe you simply want to teach something fun and fancy looking? If any of the above apply to you then our Everyday Training is the best place to start!

is this what you need?

Our Everyday Training support is the perfect option for introducing new skills to your dog and improving on existing ones. I believe that basic training is essential in order to give your dog the freedom and fun that can help provide them with happier and healthier lives.

This type of training is often referred to by many different names - Obedience, Life Skills, Good Citizenship, Doggie Manners - but at it’s core it’s about teaching your dog new skills and habits, or bettering old ones, to help them safely live in a human world.

Examples of Everyday Training include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Loose Lead Walking (aka not pulling)

  • Recall (coming back when called)

  • Basic Skills - ‘Sit’, ‘Lie Down’, ‘Go To Bed’ (or other target). etc.

  • Safety Skills - Emergency Stop, sit-stay, ‘Drop’, ‘Leave It’, heel-sit, heel-walking, ect.

  • Basic Manners - No jumping up at visitors/surfaces, mealtime manners, furniture manners, etc.

  • Fun Tricks & Tasks - ‘Selfie’, tidy-up toys, pick-up an object/retrieve, close/open a door, ‘High-Five’ and so much more.

  • Co-operative Care - Introducing grooming tools, pet equipment, vet/groomer type handling and skills for procedures such as nail clipping and blood draws, to help reduce the likelihood of future behaviour issues.

  • Play & Enrichment - Giving your dog safe outlets for the things they were born to do, building skills and exercising their body and brain while doing so.

Do you need Everyday Training or Behaviour Support?

It can be tricky to know whether the issues you’re facing fall under the category of Training or Behaviour. As a general rule of thumb, if you feel that your dog is acting or reacting due to an emotion - such as fear, anxiety, ‘aggression’, frustration or intense over-excitement - or due to something that is physically wrong - such as pain, illness or something not quite ‘right’ - then our Behaviour Support services would be the best place to start. If what you’re looking for help with doesn’t fall within the Everyday Training categories above, or if you’re just not certain, please get in touch and I can help point you in the right direction!

In-Person Training

  • With in-person training, we will be working together on a one-on-one basis at an appropriate location, meaning that you will have my undivided attention and focus, as opposed to working in a class environment where my attention would need to be split among other dogs and their owners. This allows for a truly tailored approach to your training, where we can go at your pace. I will be able to provide training technique demonstrations with your dog, if desired, and observe first hand any issues you may be having with the training. In-person sessions also provide a great opportunity for assessing any problems you might be facing, where it is safe and appropriate to do so. With in-person training the whole family can get involved, but I respectfully ask that other arrangements are made for childcare if the presence of younger children is likely to hinder or affect your own ability to listen and learn, or the training itself.

  • There are several options for location, depending on the training plan and what you are looking for help with. Most initial training sessions will take place in your home and garden, if appropriate, but if this is not possible a secure field will be used with no extra charge to you. As things progress we will utilise the areas local to you, to help ‘real world proof’ the training we have been working on, where necessary.

  • This will depend on the service you choose, however, all of our options include a certain number of 60 minute in-person sessions, a tailored follow-up training plan and either written, visual or recorded resources to help with understanding and practicing the training that was introduced in the session, along with informative guides to help broaden your knowledge of your dog’s behaviour and any changes you might be needing to make going forward.

  • Accessibility for disabilities is vital and something I believe in strongly. Please be sure to let me know of any accommodations you require in advance - you will be prompted to do so during the booking process but if there is anything you forget to include, please email me - and I will do everything I can to ensure these are met.

Online Training

  • While there is no substitute for observing and working with a dog first hand and in-person, our Online Training can still be fantastically effective. These training sessions will be conducted via video call, where we will still be able to discuss the issues you are facing and provide coaching for changes that can be made and exercises to practice. I will coach you through various different activities and help you to troubleshoot where needed, just as I would in-person, simply through a screen in real time instead. The only limit is your internet connection!

  • I use Zoom for all of my video calls, but you won’t need to pay anything extra to download or use this! While the majority of this type of training will take place in your home and garden, wifi depending, there is also scope for some ‘out and about’ coaching, depending on the training focus and the call connection strength. I would not recommend this type of session take place in public spaces, however, it could work well in a secure dog field or on private property. The appropriateness of this will be assessed on a case by case basis.

  • Just as with the in-person training, this will depend on the service you choose, however, all of our options include a number of 60 minute video call sessions, a tailored follow-up training plan and either written, visual or recorded resources to help with understanding and practicing the training that was introduced in the session, along with informative guides to help broaden your knowledge of your dog’s behaviour and any changes you might be needing to make going forward.

  • Once again, accessibility for disabilities is vital and something I believe in strongly. Please be sure to let me know of any accommodations you require in advance - you will be prompted to do so during the booking process but if there is anything you forget to include, please email me - and I will do everything I can to ensure these are met.
