Puppy Support
Have you just brought home your tiny little ball of fluff (or maybe not so fluffy) and are wondering where to begin? Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed by the puppy blues or struggling with teeth, toileting and all other manner of puppy delights? Perhaps you have yet to pick your puppy and are looking for advice? No matter what stage of the puppy journey you’re at, our Puppy Support options are here to help!
is this what you need?
Bringing home a puppy can be overwhelming, no matter how experienced you are with dogs. Even if you’ve had a puppy before it can be easy to forget just how demanding it all was, from sleepless nights and cleaning up accidents, to puppy proofing your home and enduring the needle-like puppy teeth. The ‘Puppy Blues’ are very real and felt by many puppy parents across the world!
The puppy stage is such a crucial time in a dog’s development and it can feel like a lot hangs on getting it right from the start - just like parenting! This is why I like to work with owners from as early as possible, not only to help make sure that your puppy is getting all the things they need at this point in their development, but also to help you feel less stressed and overwhelmed. I want to not only empower you and build your confidence in raising your puppy, but to be there when you need support and understanding too. .
Our puppy support options are perfect for::
Before you start your search - Before you even start looking at breeders I can help get you set up with the information and guidance you need, from which breed may be best for you, how to find and choose the right breeder and what questions to ask once you have.
When you’re picking your puppy - Even among a litter of puppies there can be many different personalities and things to look out for. I can can help you decide which puppy may be right for you and, location depending, I can even come with you to visit the breeder and the puppies in person.
Before you bring your puppy home - There can be so much to prepare before puppy comes home. I can help guide you through the process, provide shopping list recommendations, assess your home and help point out key puppy proofing considerations and give you advice for those first few days and nights.
Once your puppy is home - I can provide you with all the key support you need, both in-person (location depending) and online, helping to troubleshoot any issues or concerns you have and getting you started on some of the key skills both you and your puppy will need,
Puppies up to 6 months old - Once your puppy has settled in, I can be there at every step of the journey, helping with training, enrichment, routines, support and more!
What happens once your puppy is 6 months old?
While all dogs are different, this is usually when puppies start to become adolescents. Don’t worry, my support doesn’t end here! This is simply when you switch from the umbrella term of ‘Puppy Support’ to ‘Everyday Training’.
Your Puppy’s Needs
-
The Right Breeder
Before your puppy even comes to you, a lot of the dog they will grow to be will have been shaped by their genetics and their very early experiences. This is why starting off with the right breeder is key! I always recommend looking for breeders through reputable, knowledgeable and regulated sites and organisations such as The Kennel Club, where breeders are evaluated and inspected. There are some key questions you’ll want to ask as part of this process - all of which are things I can help you with!
-
The Right Home
There are many different breeds of dog to choose from and researching the ones you’re interested in is key. Matching up your lifestyle and what you can offer a dog is just as important as choosing a dog based on what they can offer you. As a dog owner, it is your legal responsibility to meet all of your dog’s needs, including their dietary, exercise, enrichment and social needs. It’s also worth considering common health problems of different breeds and potential vet costs of these. I can help you to find the breed that best suits you and your home!
-
Socialisation
It’s not all about meeting lots of dogs! There’s an important time in a puppy’s development where they are learning everything about the world around them - including what is scary and what isn’t. This is called the Sensitive Period for Socialisation (SPS) and it lasts from 3 weeks old to around 14 weeks old. By the time your puppy arrives home, you will only have a few weeks of this period left, before their brains are less ‘sponge-like’ when it comes to new experiences, so approaching it in the right way is key and something I can help with!
-
Understanding
One of the biggest things to remember when it comes to bringing home your puppy, is that they’re just a baby! They are still developing, both mentally and physically, and a lot of what they do simply comes from not knowing better. They never act out of spite, out of stubbornness, or to try to annoy you. They are simply still learning about the world and how things work. Even when your puppy is fully grown in size, they’re not yet fully developed in their brains, so try to keep your expectations reasonable.
-
Pain & Fear Free Methods
Puppies will often get things wrong, especially while they’re still learning. How we respond to those mistakes and how we train them will help to shape the dogs they become. This is why the methods we use while training are so important. Using pain, fear or intimidation on any dog can have a significant negative impact in many different ways, however, when it is used with puppies it can have even more negative impact on your bond with them, their way of seeing the world and their way of coping with stressful situations.
-
Training & Fun
I believe that training and enrichment are key in giving the dog your puppy will grow into the best life possible however, It’s important to know what kind of training and enrichment your puppy will need at each stage of their development. Puppies definitely don’t need strict training drills and hour long practice sessions. Instead, puppies will learn best with small amounts of simple training, ideally intertwined in play, and the introduction of key concepts such as ‘settle’. This is why having a professional on board is key!
Support Options
-
This will all depend on what stage of the puppy journey you are at. Most pre-Puppy support happens either online via Zoom video call, or in-person in your home. I like to keep these casual, where we can sit and talk through any questions or concerns you have, take a look at the set-up of your home and garden and help by making recommendations for puppy proofing and other preparations.
Once your puppy is home, we can continue with the online or in-home sessions and once your puppy has had their first vaccinations I can help you with appropriate introductions to socialisation both inside and outside of the home, all with safety in mind and appropriateness in mind.
You can choose as much or as little support as you need and I try to be as flexible as I can to fit around you.
-
All initial support will be undertaken either in your own home and garden or online via Zoom video call. Where appropriate, we will then also utilise areas local to you, to help with socialisation, or secure training fields, to help ‘real world proof’ the training.
-
This will depend on the service you choose, however, all of our options include a certain number of 60 minute in-person or online sessions, a tailored follow-up support plan and either written, visual or recorded resources to help with understanding and practicing the support and training that was introduced in the session, along with informative guides to help broaden your knowledge of your dog’s behaviour and any changes you might be needing to make going forward.
-
Accessibility for disabilities is vital and something I believe in strongly. Please be sure to let me know of any accommodations you require in advance - you will be prompted to do so during the booking process but if there is anything you forget to include, please email me - and I will do everything I can to ensure these are met.
